October 14 is World Palliative Care Day

On Saturday, October 14, 2023, World Hospice and Palliative Care Day will celebrate and foster compassionate communities: both the ideal and the reality.

“Palliative care is a shared responsibility,” writes Steven Connor, Executive Director of the Worldwide Hospice Palliative Care Alliance, which initiated World Day and tracks its activities, citing “the continued need to come together to support communities and each other now more than ever.”

Creating compassionate communities is the foundational goal of Public Health and Palliative Care International, which describes them as “mostly groups of neighbors living close to each other in villages or suburban areas that come together to organize a way to support people in their own area who are living with life-limiting illness, caregiving or grief and loss. Often these compassionate communities are inspired or facilitated by local hospice or palliative care services[.]”

Gateway House of Peace is an end-of-life care home located in Ballston Spa, NY that is dedicated to providing a safe, comfortable, caring residence for terminally ill patients and their families in need of a home during their final days. We are committed to providing compassionate, dignified, quality care that will support the natural processes that occur in the final days of life.

Gateway House does not charge for their care, and need is the deciding factor once we have determined that an individual is a good fit to be a resident at the house. While we ‘only’ have two resident beds, we often have extended family and friends at the house as they support one another, and their loved one. We are willing and able to be that ‘compassionate community’ that facilitates comfort care. If you have questions, or a loved one needs support, contact us about end of life comfort care and for assistance in finding answers to delicate topics.
